While the exact origins of the game are not known, Shuffleboard has been around for at least 500 years.
The game was played and gambled over by King Henry VIII of England, who prohibited commoners from playing; evidently he did not always win, as the record of royal expenses for 1532 show a payment from the Privy Purse of GB£9, 'Paid to Lord William, for he won, by the king's grace, at shovelboard' -Wikipedia
In modern times, as a right of passage, the ancient and mysterious game has been passed down from the elderly, to the slightly less elderly, coinciding with the latter groups acceptance into the AARP.
In an effort to show our continuing defiance to the former motherlands class hierarchy, we would like to send an open invitation to EVERYONE, to join us for a lighthearted shuffleboard tournament at Union City's Harter Park, Saturday, August 30th. Free play/practice starts at 6:00pm. Match play starts at 7:00pm.
There is no entry fee, and no prize for the winning team, simply bragging rights. Never played before? That's okay, neither have we.
Hot dogs and drinks will be available for $1. While everyone is invited to attend, only eight teams of two will be able to play in the tournament. Please sign up using the form below. UPDATE: 8/30/2014 Registration has ended for this event
If you sign up, and for any reason will not be able to participate, please email editor@unioncitynow as soon as possible.
See you there!
