The 1st annual Union City Out of the Darkness Walk will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Shelter #1 (behind pool) in Harter Park. Registration will open at 1 pm (pre-registration is SUGGESTED). There is no cost to walk, but donations of any amount are appreciated. The itinerary for the day includes a speaker on bullying and its effects, a memorial cross "wall", a DJ, the walk, and the drawing of lots of door prizes donated by local businesses and community members.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) started the Out of the Darkness Walks in 2004 in 24 cities nationwide. In 2011, there were 242 walks held nationwide! Funds go to research, education, advocacy, suicide prevention initiatives, and programs to support those impacted by suicide. Suicide is the 4th leading cause of death among adults 18-65 years old, with 36,000 Americans completing each year, which is DOUBLE the rate of homicides in our country.
The walk committee includes Darla Bowman, Nikki Eliton, Glenda Williams, and Sherryl Mead. They are all from the local area, and have all experienced the tragic loss of a loved one to suicide. They are joining together to offer hope to the millions who have lost a loved one or who battle personally with depression, bipolar illness, addiction, and other mental illnesses, with great hope that they can reduce the stigma that surrounds a death by suicide, and allow people to know that they do care and are here to reach out to for support. They are building hope and shedding light on the topic of suicide, which is, most often, kept in the darkness.
They are currently in the fundraising stages of the walk. They are selling Abby Candles, memorial crosses ($5 each), and ceramic angels ($14 each), with some proceeds from each sale going to the AFSP.
They are holding a Zumbathon on Sunday, August 12th (next Sunday) at the UC Eagles Lodge from 2-4 pm. Cost is $10 per participant, and the instructor, Tina Lipps, has graciously donated ALL money back to the walk! Should be a fun time!
Teams are currently selling OOTD team tshirts also. They are $10 each, and are team specific to a certain person.
